Downsend School Talks Rubbish!!
SUEZ facilitated workshops at Downsend School with years 9 and 10 students. The sessions involved learning about the sector, our partnership with Surrey County Council (SCC), and how to plan a campaign on reducing waste.
Hosted by SUEZ’s Community Engagement Officer Grace Leech, students were taken on a journey through the waste industry. Getting to know all about the services we provide across Surrey, such as Community Recycling Centres (CRCs), Revive shops, energy recovery, and waste transfer operations.

In groups students planned campaigns on reducing different waste types such as electricals, food, and textiles. At the end of the session the teams presented their campaigns and awards were given to the winning group for each waste type.
They also had to consider behaviour change and how we can help to change people’s perspective on waste, enabling the public to start to see waste as a resource that can be reused or used to create energy.
Grace Leech said, ‘The students were very engaged, and worked well to produce innovative campaigns. I hope to see them working in the waste industry at some point in the future!’
