Our overall objective is to reduce the amount of waste that’s sent to landfill, both benefiting the environment and reducing the tax bill for the county. We do this by working to boost re-use, recycling, composting and recovery.
We have successfully built and now operate energy recovery facilities at the Eco Park, near Shepperton. The gasification facility at the Eco Park processes around one third of Surrey’s household waste left after recycling, which is then used as a fuel to generate electricity. The anaerobic digestion facility at the Eco Park treats all of Surrey’s food waste, generating electricity and producing digestate which can be used as a soil improver in agriculture.
We also operate 15 community recycling centres, five re-use shops and five waste transfer and bulking facilities on behalf of Surrey County Council.
