Mindful Gardeners – where mental health meets sustainability!
This summer, in collaboration with The Lucy Rayner Foundation, the SUEZ Surrey team was pleased to launch Mindful Gardeners, a four-week programme at Earlswood Junior School that gave Year 6 students tools to manage stress and anxiety through outdoor learning and environmental awareness.
The children took part in weekly workshops covering mindfulness, grounding techniques, and sustainability. Students had the chance to fill planters using crates provided by our Kensington and Chelsea municipal team, make use of compost donated by our green waste partners Envar, and plant a beautiful sensory garden using borders from Garden on a Roll, complete with bird feeders!
Feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive:
- They felt calmer, more grounded, and more confident in helping the planet.
- Many said they wanted to continue gardening at home.
Thanks to the success of this pilot, we’ll be expanding Mindful Gardeners to six more schools next academic year.
Commenting on the programme, Partnership and Community Engagement Coordinator, Grace Leech said: “This project is a brilliant example of how we can combine environmental education with real mental health support for young people. Seeing the students grow in confidence and connection to the planet over just a few weeks was incredibly rewarding. We’re excited to take this further into more schools next year.”
Earlswood Junior School’s Business Manager, Michelle Ellis, added: “It’s been a pleasure having SUEZ with us over the past four weeks. The children absolutely loved the sessions, we’ve had lovely feedback from them. We feel very lucky to have been part of your first programme, and we hope this is just the beginning! It would be fantastic to work with you again in the future, we’d welcome you back anytime.”
A big thank you to everyone who supported this initiative – from colleagues and our partners to the brilliant students who made it such a success.
